The 5th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime Pursuant to the decision of the 4th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) in Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia hosted the 5th SOMTC and related Meetings on 13-17 June 2005 in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. On 14 Jun 2005, H.E. Deputy Minister Sar Kheng, Co-Minister of Interior addressed the 5th Annual ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (5th SOMTC). “With the opening of international borders and the development of ever-closer economic and social links between countries and within regions, we are all faced with certain criminal groups who wish to abuse such integration and the benefits of that come with it, “ said Deputy Prime Minister. He stressed that the organized crime network has many heads but only one body. The body is that of transnational organized crime. Its major heads are involved with terrorism, illicit drug trafficking, people smuggling, sea piracy, arm smuggling, money laundering, international economic crime and cyber crime. “In order to destroy the transnational crime-or at least reduce its ability to function to the maximum extent possible, we must find ways of striking sever blows at all heads of the monster at the same time, “he added. “To
achieve this, we must have a clear direction and develop strategies that
build on the respective competencies that each of us possess and we must
actively encourage the provision of external human, financial and other
resources from outside the region to work with us in this fight, “ he said. |
