Remarkably Increase Over 8 Months
Over
the past 8 months of this year, the number of foreign tourists visiting
Cambodia remarkably increased to some 912,000, or up by nearly 39
per cent as compared with the same period in 2004, according to
a tourism official.
H.
E. Nut Nin Doeun, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Tourism
said that in 2004 over 1.05 millions foreign tourists visited Cambodia,
or up by more than 50 % over 2003, and the number of local tourists
reaching the total of more than 4.28 millions last year showed a
twofold increase, speaking at ceremony held in Phnom Penh last week
to announce the implementation of a project relating to the safety
of children in tourism and the prevention of trafficking of children
and women for the purpose of labor and sex exploitation.
The
success in tourism was great, however, he said, the negative impacts
resulting from the tourism had to be deeply considered.
He said all urgent measures had to be taken to prevent the exploitation
of child labor and sex and to fight against human trafficking, especially
children and women. According to a recent study on tourist industry
in Cambodia, the number of tourists is expected to increase to 1.5
millions in 2006; and 3 millions in 2010.
This
would also create jobs for some 60,000 Cambodians and contribute
estimated US$ 2.3 billions as revenue to the national economy.
