World Bank’s Aid to Cambodia Education

The World Bank has decided to provide US $ 1.8 million as a grant aid to support education in Cambodia.

An agreement on the aid was signed recently between the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the World Bank.

The World Bank statement stated that this aid, which has been granted by the Japan Social Development Fund (JSDF) through the WB, will be used to financially assist a new project that focuses on educating poor children who do not have the opportunity to go to school.

Mr. Ian Porter, the Director of the World Bank in Cambodia, said that this project is in line with the strategic principles concerning giving new aid to Cambodia with the aim of fostering equal education opportunities in Cambodia, in order to progress properly towards achieving the millennium Development Goal’s.

H. E. Mr. Kol Pheng, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, said recently that in Cambodia, as of 2003, 32% of 13 million people were illiterate.
